For first time cruisers, one of the biggest concerns are sea days. There’s some unfounded fear at the thought of being at sea for a day or two.
Let me assure you…sea day are the best. What’s not to love? No need to set the alarm clock to make it into port. A great day for breakfast in bed. Some gym time to work off those meals. Or if you’re like me you prefer a nap in a lounge chair overlooking the ocean.
Here are a few reasons why sea days are the best days.
Set Your Own Schedule
If you’re an early riser, find a quiet spot to watch the sunrise over the ocean. Take some pictures to make your friends back home jealous.
For those of us who like to sleep late, if you miss out on the breakfast buffet who cares. It’s a cruise. There’s always food to be found along with a Bloody Mary calling your name.
Part of the cruise experience is complimentary room service. Make sea days your breakfast in bed days. Omelets, eggs benedict and mimosas delivered to your room. It might not have the same sentiment as when the kids bring you breakfast in bed on Mother’s Day. But I promise it will taste better than cold toast and weak coffee. Plus, the view is much better.
Time for the Spa
Sea Days are a great time to check out the spa. Everyone needs a massage from time to time. And today’s ship’s offer more than the standard facials and pedicures. These days you can splurge on Botox and teeth whitening.
And after all that pampering hit the steam room and sauna.
Find a Lounge Chair, Catch Some Rays
Seriously, is there anything better than laying in a lounge chair, watching the sea with a cocktail in your hand? The pool areas can get crowded. If you’re looking for some true R & R, most ships offer adults only areas. And if you really want to splurge, rent a cabana for the day and let the pool waiters come to you.
Be a Kid for a Change
At home, you get to shuttle the kids around. On sea days adults get to play for a change. Hit the water slides, rope courses, and mini-golf – whatever your ship has to offer. You’re on vacation. Go hit the rock climbing wall.
Explore the Ship
Sea days give you a great chance to catch up on your duty-free shopping. So sea days give you a great opportunity to buy some souvenirs for loved ones back home and for yourself.
Have you ever wanted to learn to salsa dance? Maybe a wine tasting or cooking are your things. Ships offer all sort of classes from dancing to Pilates to cooking. Check the daily schedule to see what your ship is offering.
If you’ve had enough sun, maybe it’s time to come inside and find some gaming fun. Again, check the daily schedule for everything from backgammon to bridge and bingo.
And pack a deck of cards and some board games for you and your traveling companions. Find a spot for a hot game of Spades or Uno.
After all the sea day fun you’ll probably need a nap.
Grab your camera, a glass of wine and a comfortable spot to watch a spectacular sunset. Pink clouds and unobstructed views for miles in every direction. Bliss.
If possible book a cabin with a balcony. It’s your private oasis to take in morning coffee, an afternoon snack, read a book or take in an afternoon nap. It’s also the perfect spot to watch for falling stars before you call it a day.
And that’s why Sea Days are the best days.
